Top Five Reasons for M&A Failure
- This event has passed.
Harvard Business Review reports that “Typically, 70-90% of acquisitions are abysmal failures.” M&A is a high pressure situation full of unseen risks on both the buy and sell side. How do you orchestrate and navigate through pre-deal and post-deal activities to make sure your foreseen synergies are actually realized?
“Ego is a huge part of the M&A process. And it’s usually an ‘end-zone catch.’ Most companies don’t think ahead about post-deal integration.” Dave Vellequette, former CFO of Avaya and JDS Uniphase.
Every acquisition is different and a check list templatized approach will not ensure success. Prepare now so that you can control the process and stage your company for the best exit. Come to this FEISV Professional Development Seminar to:
- Gain insights from “Best and Worst Practices” in M&A
- Understand how the “right” deal terms and structure can unintentionally motivate the wrong outcomes
- Get alignment with key stakeholders (internal and external) on what post-deal success looks like
- Develop guideposts so your next M&A transaction has a much greater than 30% probability for success
This seminar is led by Cathy Chiu and Ron Yu who, together, have decades of M&A execution and operating executive experience to dive deeply into M&A strategy-to-execution, team alignment disconnects, and critical issues often neglected to ensure post-deal success. They have conducted extensive interviews with CEOs, CFOs, COOs, CPOs, CHROs involved in transactions representing more than $10B in market valuation.
Catherine Chiu, Managing Partner of Falcon Associates, has built her M&A experience from all sides of the negotiating table. She has advised public and private companies in acquisition, strategic joint venture and sale as an investment banker, closing deals from $5 million to $1 billion. She has been part of the corporate executive team in executing acquisitions, and negotiated exits on behalf of portfolio companies while in venture capital. She is also an active angel investor (Co-President of Berkeley Angel Network), and has honed her investment diligence experience by engaging with many early-stage companies. Cathy brings to her M&A advisory work not only financial expertise, M&A process management and negotiations experience, but perspectives gained from client situations, peer-advising discussions, and portfolio companies’ challenges. Cathy believes deeply that it is important to shape successful M&A outcomes by paying close attention to building in wins for everyone, at all stages of the process.
Ron Yu, Managing Partner of ExecCatalyst, is a high-tech executive coach with a passion for helping C-level executives grow as leaders and removing people-friction within their teams that impede business execution.
